Each harmony tie-dye is intricately hand folded, bound with string and dyed with colorfast dyes to produce brilliant designs and bright colors that neither fade nor run.
Harmony's Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this batik?
A: No. Batik is a cousin of tie-dye. Batik is done by painting or stamping a wax design onto material. The dye does not penetrate the wax and the design shows through, often with interesting lines where the wax has cracked and dye has slipped in. At Harmony, we we work at exploring the art of tie-dye.
Q: Do your dyes run, fade or turn my skin colors?
A: No. We use fiber reactive dyes, first developed in the 1950's. This type of dye does not require hot water, and the colors are brilliant and permanent. The molecules of the dye actually combine with the molecules of a 100% cotton, rayon, or silk material to form a strong and permanent bond. However, like any new garment, if it has dye remnants, wash the garment in a hot wash. We recommend using color catchers by Shout available at the grocery store's laundry aisle. Also, don't leave the garment wet on itself or on other clothing.
Q: Do I have to hand wash my new tie-dyes?
A: No. Use reasonable care when washing all new garments for the first time. Wash in cold water with like colors. Remove promptly and tumble dry. Do not wash by hand!
Q: How do I find out which craft fair you will attend next?
A: We attend scores of craft fairs throughout the year and will be in a town near you soon. To find out our schedule, please call us at: 209-571-2767, or email us at: info@harmonytie-dyes.com.
Q: I've tried tie-dying and it never turned out like yours. What am I doing wrong?
A: You can never do tie-dying wrong. It is a creative process requiring no special skill. Part of the appeal of tie-dying is that anyone can do it and produce beautiful designs. However, like any art, experience, inspiration, and training allows the artist to more easily put into reality what is in his mind. At Harmony, we've had lots of time to develop our skills and continue to grow. If you want tie-dye like ours, you can either purchase them from our store, or purchase our how-to book and dye kit and use our tools to perfect your own skills.
